Interview with Peter Hayes @ NAMM Jan. 16th, 2010 TWT: We heard you (B.R.M.C.) got kicked out if a rehearsal studio, is that true? Peter: Yup. They said we (B.R.M.C.) were too loud. TWT: That's awesome. They have a DB limit here at NAMM. Hopefully we won't get kicked out of here today! OK, it looks like you have some really cool gear. Can you tell us what you brought with you today? Peter: I have a 1950's Fender Tweed Amp and a 70's Gibson 335 along with another acoustic Gibson. TWT: Right on, can you explain a little about your experience using the Apollo pedal? Peter: I use the Apollo to set my volume at 78% and 94%. I found that this will let me get the distortion I am looking for out of the Tweed. TWT: Can you give me a little more detail on that? Peter: Yeah, I over drive the amp by setting it's own gain at around 6-7. I then found the using my volume pedal plugged into your Apollo pedal I can see that at 94 (on the Apollo pedal) a cool distortion can be obtained. I then set another level at 78 (on the Apollo display) when I don't want distortion. When playing I just swap back and forth using the Apollo. No need to touch the volume pedal anymore. TWT: Awesome, so basically you are using the Apollo pedal to easily recall the exact spot you want for a distortion sound and the best spot to not have a distortion sound? Peter: Yeah. TWT: If you did not have the Apollo pedal, how would you have done the same effect? Peter: It could be done one of two ways; one way is to use a distortion pedal of course, but that can interfere with your tone and most purists out there don't want that. The other way is to use a clear or clean channel boost. TWT: With a clear or clean channel boost can you select the boost level or are you stuck with what you get? Peter: You're stuck with what you get. The nice thing about the Apollo is I can customize the level and save it. TWT: So in this application you are using the Apollo like a customizable clean or clear channel boost then? Peter: Yes, as far as I can tell this is probably the best way for any purists out there to add more control to their volume pedal without effecting the tone itself. TWT: What else do you like about the Apollo? Peter: I can see a lot of musicians using this won't have to go step on their volume pedals to make sure they are working when trying to figure out some problem with their rig or setup. With this you can see whether the pedal is @ 100 or not and can quickly eliminate the volume pedal as a problem. TWT: Nice too know. So anything coming up with BRMC? Peter: Yeah, as you know we released a DVD recently available on our website and we are kicking off a new tour starting in March to coincide with the release of our new album. TWT: Will we be hearing any of the new stuff today? Peter: Probably not. TWT: Well, I had to try.
